Jeff Lynne & Electric Light Orchestra

By admin | April 13, 2010

One can not imagine one of the most famous bands Electric Light Orchestra without its leader Jeffrey Lynne. Jeff Lynne (born 30 December, 1947, Birmingham) and his band ELO are inalienable from one another. By the way Lynne combines also the talents of singer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist and record producer. It is a famous fact that he gained an incredible recognition as the leader of Electric Light Orchestra. In 2008 the musician was named the fourth greatest record producer in music history by Washington Times. It is worth mentioning that in order to receive such honorary rank a musician has to run a great course.

Speaking about early career of Lynne the first thing to mention is the fact that he was the member of the music band “The Andicaps”. This lasted for a year because in 1964 Lynne quit the band. In 1970 Jeff Lynne together with his friend Roy Wood joined the band The Move.

The history of creation the band Electric Light Orchestra begins in 1970. That year Lynne suggested Roy Wood and Ben Bevan making a new project where classical and rock music would be combined. The suggestion was implemented the same year. However there were some problems between the founders of the ELO that led to Wood’s departure. Lynne took the band on his own responsibility. The subsequent albums released by ELO (ELO 2, On The Third Day, Eldorado, Face The Music) won the favour of the large audience.

By the New World Record Jeff Lynne introduced new changes. He made the sound more complex with unique pop-rock elements mixed with studio strings and layered vocals and tight, catchy pop singles. By that period of time Jeff Lynne performed the duties of producer, songwriter, lead singer and guitarist.

In 1981 Lynne invented a new direction for his band. Their album Time included than science-fiction themes and it was a great success in UK.

In 1986 the band ELO called a halt to its activity and Lynne was carried away by producing.
His work in the 1990’s includes production of the album for Julliane Ray which was entitled Something Peculiar and contributions to albums by such musicians as Joe Cocker, Aerosmith, Tom Jones, Bonnie Tyler.
For his numerous merits and services Lynne was awarded the Ivor Novell Award for “Outstanding Contributions to British Music” for the second time.

In 2001 the musician again devoted his energy to the band ELO. The same year he released a new album which was entitled Zoom. The album was favorably received by the audience. Lynne was planning to organize a tour of ELO, however on account of some definite reasons it was cancelled.

In 2009 Jeff Lynne received the Golden Note Award by ASCAD. This award is adjudged to those artists and musicians who during their career managed to achieve great and extraordinary results.

In his way Jeff Lynne is really a man of genius. The results of his many years’ work continue to inspire and amaze a great number of people till the present time.

Electric Light Orchestra members.

By admin | April 13, 2010

The band ELO enjoyed wide popularity thanks to its melodious and beautiful songs. Their style of performing combined the use of stringed and keyboard instruments and unusual method of sounding.

The initial membership of ELO was represented by such musicians as: Jeff Lynne (singing, guitar, keyboard instruments), Ben Bevan (percussion instruments), Richard Tandy (bass), Bill Hunt (wind instruments) and Steve Woolam (violin). The first album entitled Electric Light Orchestra caused a great sensation. Roy Wood applied much effort to the album. He composed majority of the songs and played different instruments. Jeff Lynne also showed his worth in this work. His songs Overture 10538 got in top ten of the British hit parade. Soon Ben Bevan came to a decision to leave the band. Thus Jeff Lynne became the undoubted leader of ELO and he got down to creating new albums and hits.

After the releasing of ELO’s fourth album Eldorado, A Symphony, Kelly Groucutt(vocalist and bassist) and Melvyn Gale (cellist) became new members of the band. So they replaced de Albuquerque and Edwards. As to the latter the main reason that made him quit consisted in ELO’s tours.   They kept him away from the family. Since that time a new period for the given band began. Then it was a classical membership of the band that showed the world such great and inimitable albums as Face the Music, New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery.

The year 1981 signified the time of releasing of a new album under the title Time. While recording the songs Jeff Lynne paid a great attention to the use of composers. That year Melvyn Gale and Hugh McDowell left the band, however the violinist Mik Kaminski took the part in recording the album. After the leave of Kamenski the band ELO made up a quartette. In 1980’s the musicians did not go on tours, instead of it they preferred to have a more flexible regime. Their wish to continue the activity of ELO was failing and it resulted in the breakup of the band in 1986.

Nobody could assume that the breakup had only a temporary character. 14 years later ELO was reinformed. Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy represented the former membership. After the recording of the album Zoom in 2001 Lynne invited new members including his girl friend Rosie Vela. Former Beatles Ringo Starr and George Harrison also gave their consent to join the band ELO.

John Lennon in ELO's "Mr Blue Sky"?

By admin | April 7, 2010

Does anyone know if John Lennon helped at all on Electric Light Orchestra’s song "Mr. Blue Sky"? I can’t find any credit to him singing on it, but if you listen from like 0:30 to 0:39 it really sounds like John Lennon singing the line "It’s a beautiful new day. A hey hey."

If you haven’t noticed, go listen to it. It’s either John Lennon or someone who could really pull off a John Lennon tribute band. haha

By the way, I know Jeff Lynne sings that line too, but I’m talking about the person he harmonizes with.

Help with singing career?

By admin | April 4, 2010

My only real passion in life is music. I love to sing all the time and I love old music like Electric Light Orchestra, The Beatles, Aerosmith, and Guns N’ Roses. I’ll be heading off to college in about a year and while I’m expected to go the normal route and become a doctor teacher lawyer etc. I really want to be a singer in like a classic rock inspired band. My family has told me that my voice is about a 7 on a scale from 1 to 10. It’s on pitch and everything but nothing special. But if it’s something I feel in my heart and I’m so passionate about do you think with vocal training I could realistically make it a career or does a person really need amazing chops? Any opinions are appreciated because I’m from a small town where careers like that aren’t really supported and it’s kind of my secret. Thanks.
Sorry I don’t get what I want in life by demoralizing myself. And I love music. I don’t just want to be some rock star for the fame. I want to be a musican and sing in front of crowds for the love of performing music.

Have you ever thought of one song when you were actually listening to something else?

By admin | April 3, 2010

Hearing a song that reminded me of another song was something that’s been on my mind during my days of listening to the music. I’m not talking about song rip-offs. Whenever a song is playing on the radio, I shut up and concentrate because it sounds like another song due to the similarities of the instrumentals but not the lyrics between the two. Sometimes I sing out the wrong lyrics!

My examples? Here are the following rock tracks:
1.) Linkin Park’s "What I’ve Done" in place of Sia’s "Breathe"
2.) My Chemical Romance’s "Helena" in place of The Offspring’s "Half-Truism"
3.) Green Day’s "21 Guns" in place of Electric Light Orchestra’s "Telephone Line"
4.) The Beatles’ "Hello Goodbye" in place of Plain White T’s "1, 2, 3, 4"
5.) David Bowie’s "Life On Mars" in place of Eric Carmen’s "All By Myself"

What about you? Have you ever thought of one song when you were actually listening to something else? Please mention any of your examples.
